Re: Off-duty cop hits driver, spouts slurs
Recently, Chance Lovell a sworn officer of the Scottsdale police department was charged with one count of misdemeanor assault while criminal investigations are pending over an “apparent drunken [racist] rage Monday, according to a Tempe police report.” This incident is compounded by Chance Lovell’s apparent blatant misuse of authority which involved a discriminatory action toward, and assault of, an innocent citizen, as well as his severely misguided decision to drive while intoxicated. None of these behaviors should be tolerated, especially by any sworn agent of the state.
Chance Lovell’s apparent misuse of his authority involves the reported off-duty use of his badge for no other purpose than as a vulgar display of power, while directing a racial epithet toward an innocent citizen before physically assaulting this person. If found to be true, this action constitutes an official form of discrimination since his badge was displayed prior to the behaviors in question, and if Chance Lovell is not terminated for these actions alone; then we may consider these behaviors (e.g. racism and assault) fully condoned by the Scottsdale Police Department. The accusation that Chance Lovell was intoxicated while driving only further exacerbates the incident. Drinking and driving is one of the more despicable and ironically most preventable crimes plaguing our nation, one that puts everyone at risk; a blatant, and inexcusable violation of the social contract and thus antithetical to the rule of law and social harmony.
Government organizations, like the police, can only be construed as legitimate and valid if they are in fact created and supported by the governed populace. Accordingly, officer actions that seriously violate these principles should warrant termination. As a concerned and taxpaying citizen, I in no way support or condone the toxic and repugnant behavior exhibited by Chance Lovell, and as one that values a just and democratic social order, I call for Chance Lovell’s immediate resignation and encourage other concerned citizens to do the same.

Before you "call for Chance Lovell's immediate resignation and encourage other concerned citizens to do the same", I strongly suggest you find out the facts of the case. You weren't there in the cab so you can't say for sure what happened. You even used the words in paragraph two "if found to be true". Having such a strong opinion to have Officer Lovell terminated, following that phrase, is contradictive. I am also wondering whether you are a personal friend of Omar Abdi. I ask this because you have referred to him as being an innocent citizen. Only one who really knows Mr. Abdi can attest to whether he is an innocent citizen. The only thing I have left to say is that Officer Lovell received seven letters of commendation and three superior performance awards. He was also nominated for the 2006 chief's award of excellence.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and for your comments. I have addressed these below.

Your criticism that my position is “contradictive” is simply incorrect. I am calling for Chance Lovell's resignation on the assumption (e.g. "if found to be true") that the evidence regarding the assault and racial epithet is correct and true. The possible fact that he may have assaulted this person while spewing racial hatred is only an aggravating circumstance toward the overall situation.
However, no one is contesting the fact that Chance Lovell was driving while intoxicated. He, and others like him (e.g. police, firefighters, politicians and others holding sworn or elected public positions) should be terminated for driving while intoxicated, period. This action puts everyone (you, me, our children) in society in unneccesary danger and is in all cases inexcusable and despicable. Such behavior, in any instance, should not only be unacceptable but especially so for those holding public office as they are, and should be, held to higher standards than citizens. Remember, the power to use deadly force does not include operating 3,000 pound projectile objects recklessly toward any living thing, human or otherwise.

I do not know Omar Abdi and it makes no difference whether I am acquainted with this person or not. Omar Abdi was charged with no crime, Chance Lovell was charged with a crime. In this instance then, your statement is indeed quite misleading. Discrediting or blaming the victim, much like rapists, is a divisive tactic employed as a manipulative psychological tool.

This statement is so out of left field it hardly warrants any consideration. But here goes. If I understand your statement correctly, you are suggesting here that those who receive awards for service or merit are in any and all cases incapable of moral or legal violations. This is silly for reasons that should be glaringly obvious.
Maybe before you make any rash decisions you should find out more about the case. Were you at the scene? I doubt it, so keep your comments that are UNFOUNDED to yourself.
